What thatch is, and when it stops being useful

Thatch is the mat of dead runners, stems and roots that builds up between the soil and the green leaf. A thin layer is good for a lawn — it insulates the soil, holds a little moisture and softens foot traffic.

Past a certain thickness it stops being a blanket and becomes a barrier. Water hits it and runs off sideways. Fertiliser sits in it and feeds nothing. Roots start growing into the thatch instead of into the soil, which leaves the whole lawn sitting on a spongy layer that dries out in a week without rain and scalps every time it is mown.

You can usually feel it before you see it. A lawn with too much thatch is bouncy underfoot, and the mower sinks and scalps in patches.

Why it happens faster here

Warm-season grasses — buffalo, couch, zoysia — grow by running across the surface, and in Townsville they grow for most of the year. That is a lot of runner laid down annually.

Frequent light watering makes it worse: the roots stay in the damp top layer instead of chasing water downward. So does over-feeding with high nitrogen, which pushes leaf growth faster than the soil can break the old growth down.

How we decide, and why you will not always get one

We measure the thatch before the machine comes off the trailer — a plug pulled from the lawn, measured, and photographed. What we find sets how hard the machine runs, and on plenty of lawns the answer is a light pass rather than a heavy one.

Some lawns should not be dethatched at all this year, and we will say so and not charge you for a pass you did not need. Telling you no costs us a job. Wrecking your lawn costs you a season.

Buffalo needs different treatment, and this matters

Buffalo has no rhizomes. It spreads only by above-ground runners, which means every growing point is in the layer a scarifier cuts through. Run a machine set for couch across buffalo and you can take out most of what it needs to regrow from.

So on buffalo we go wider on the blade spacing, run it shallower, test a hidden section first and look at it before committing to the rest. If the lawn will not take it, we stop.

Worth knowing: a lot of what is sold in Townsville as "NQ Buffalo" is actually carpet grass, which behaves differently again. We identify what you have got before we do anything to it.

When we will not run the machine

If more than about a third of the lawn is already bare or thinning. If the turf lifts by hand. If it is under about six months old. If there is visible disease. If it is already scalped or drought-stressed.

In every one of those cases the machine takes out more than the lawn can put back, and you spend the next season watching it recover from us.

Afterwards

It will look worse before it looks better — thin, scruffy, more soil showing than you expected. That is the point: the light and the water are now reaching the soil instead of a dead mat.

Feed it straight after, water it properly, and expect two to four weeks of hard growing before it looks like a lawn again. We take the green waste with us.

How it is priced

Quoted per lawn, because the price depends on the size and on how thick the thatch is — a heavy mat is a slower pass and a lot more green waste to cart away.
